What shall I wear?
Do first impressions count on meeting someone? The answer to that is yes!
How you look goes a long way in people’s perception of you.
It may be that through time their opinion may change as they get to know you but for the majority of people it’s extremely important to make that first impression count.
When deciding on what to wear its important to decide what kind of impression you wish the other person to have about you. Do you wish to come across as all business, wearing a suit or do you want to take the more casual approach wearing jeans and less formal clothing.
It’s important not to come across as being too keen and for a female this means not wearing too much make-up or jewellery. Keep everything natural looking and light. If you wear perfume make sure it is subtle and not one that lingers long after you have left the room.
Pick one aspect of yourself that you want to show off. Do not try and show all of it at once as you will come across as too flirty. Not every man likes this look and most prefer for you to keep it simple. Remember this is only your first date and you may want to change the way you dress as the relationship progresses but for the first time less is definitely more!
What you wear may de dependant upon where you are going. If meeting for a coffee then perhaps a simple pair of jeans and a top will suffice. However if going for dinner, then again, this will depend where you are going. Something a bit more formal such as a dress for a female or a collar and tie for a male may be appropriate on such an occasion.
Confirm where you are going first as simply ‘out to dinner’ can mean anything from a pizza to a five course slap up meal. Phone the restaurant before hand and double check and see if there is a dress code. If so remember and let the other person know as although they have booked the restaurant, they may never have been to it before and have booked it to try and impress you.
Just remember that people dress more casually than ever before. Not every man wears a collar and tie when going out for coffee. Try and dress according to your age and if going for a walk then remember to wear appropriate footwear and take a jacket as the weather has been known to change inadvertently!
Both of you will be undoubtedly nervous but try and relax and it will make the time much more enjoyable and pass so much more quickly.
